For Whom I Write

I have created this side in order to provide (mostly) on-line resources for the teaching and researching of early medieval art.

I envision the following readers:

First, the generalist or non-medievalist art historian who teaches the first part of the standard two-semester art history survey, commonly known as “Caves to Cathedrals”.  Both Stokstad and Gardner devote one chapter to early medieval Europe, and early medieval material also appears in the Late Antique and Byzantine chapter(s).  I taught such a course from a global perspective in the Fall of 2007 and would have felt immense gratitude for such a site as this for fields outside my specialty.

Second, I envision the specialist from an adjacent field who teaches an early medieval art survey or even a later medievalist who teaches early medieval art as part of the broader medieval survey.

Third, I envision the non-art historian early medievalist who wishes to incorporate visual material into his or her teaching and/or research.

Fourth, I envision graduate students new to early medieval art, who, whether for the purposes of a seminar or for the long-term, require initiation into the field.

Finally, I envision fellow early medieval art historians who would enjoy a dialogue about the teaching of early medieval art and stand always on the lookout for new resources, both visual and textual.
